AIRTEC Motorsport Front Mount Intercooler for Honda Civic FL5 Type R
Our solution to increasing the intercooler’s size and performance is based upon a core design that is wider, taller and deeper. This offers a massive 158% increase in overall capacity in comparison to the original intercooler, as well as a substantial 30% increase in frontal area over standard.

Technical Data
As part of our expanding Honda platform product range, AIRTEC Motorsport is proud to launch our intercooler kit for the FL5 Civic Type R, suitable for track or fast road use.
In order to ensure there is no noticeable loss in performance during extended periods of hard driving, we have developed a larger, freer-flowing intercooler that is a direct replacement for the smaller and more restrictive OEM item.
Our solution to increasing the intercooler’s size and performance within the confines of the limited space behind the bumper is based upon a core design that is wider, taller and deeper.
This offers a massive 158% increase in overall capacity in comparison to the original intercooler, as well as a substantial 30% increase in frontal area over standard, which allows it to make the most of the air flow provided. Importantly, we opted not to utilise a full height intercooler as this wouldn’t allow for an uprated oil cooler in the future, so looking at the bigger picture for a complete cooling package, we chose a core that was a slightly higher and wider, but twice as deep. This still allows a huge increase in performance whilst allowing for an uprated oil cooler too.
The inlet and outlet sizes of the intercooler also increases from 55mm in and 59mm out to 65mm in and 70mm out, an increase of nearly 20% to further improve flow and can be used with the original pipework or our AIRTEC Motorsport larger diameter cold side boost pipe. The pipework also replaces the original O-ringed flanges with larger silicone hoses to improve flow and increase internal area.
Together with our high-flow, moulded one-piece cast end tanks and an internal air diverter to ensure flow is directed correctly and efficiently, the AIRTEC Motorsport intercooler offers much greater efficiency and volume over standard.
Available in a high quality powder coated black finish, the comprehensive kit is a direct replacement and comes with Pro Hoses silicone connectors, all fixtures and fittings, as well as detailed fitting instructions.
Its improved cooling efficiency and easy fitment makes it an essential modification for all modified Civic Type R FL5 models.
TESTED
Independently tested by TPW Engineering, UK.
“I did three consecutive power runs to get detailed logs showing the intake temperature changes during fully loaded power runs taking about 12.5 seconds from 30mph to limiter. After each run the car was allowed to slow to a stop give 30 seconds at idle then next run performed.
First run tends to get things stabilised but differences before and after are pretty conclusive that the benefits of a quality intercooler are irrefutable.
Original Intercooler:
Run 1
Intake Air Temperature (IAT) at filter – 22°C, which remained stable within couple degree through all tests.
IAT at throttle body after intercooler – Start: 30°C. End: 67°C.
Run 2
IAT at throttle body after intercooler – Start: 42°C. End: 82°C.
Run 3
IAT at throttle body after intercooler – Start: 42°C. End: 83°C.
AIRTEC Motorsport Intercooler and Pipework:
Run 1
IAT at throttle body after intercooler – Start: 27°C. End: 25°C. (Basically so efficient it’s taking a while to start heating up)
Run 2
IAT at throttle body after intercooler – Start: 29°C. End: 39°C.
Run 3
IAT at throttle body after intercooler – Start: 36°C. End: 47°C.
In conclusion, the AIRTEC Motorsport intercooler is giving a resultant drop of 40°C over the original set up that becomes overpowered very quickly as you can see the rate of temperature increase on the attached logs from each run.
Also worth pointing out that you start to get a heavy reduction in torque targeting as soon as IATs go over 30°C, so if your pushing hard on road or especially track getting an intercooler is pretty much a must-have option.
80°C IATs are pretty scary to be honest and is a worst case situation, as you won’t normally see hard loaded long runs like we do on the dyno, so you would be lifting then temperatures will drop slightly but it is a good example of how much more efficient and effective a good intercooler set up is for retaining the performance of your car.
Fitment is far simpler than previous FK8 as well as you don’t need to remove the full undertrays.”
